Johor Skills College (KKJ) is a skills training institution operating under Kumpulan Pendidikan YPJ Sdn. Bhd. (KPYJ), a subsidiary of Yayasan Pelajaran Johor (YPJ). Yayasan Pelajaran Johor is an education foundation established by the Johor State Government.
KKJ functions as an Accredited Training Centre under the Department of Skills Development (JPK), Ministry of Human Resources, providing technical and vocational education and training (TVET) that meets national skills standards and industry requirements.
The institution offers various skills-based training programmes, including the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM), Malaysian Skills Diploma (DKM), as well as short-term courses, with an emphasis on practical learning and hands-on training to ensure graduates are prepared to face the real working environment.
Through the implementation of an industry-oriented curriculum, experienced instructors, and continuous improvement in training quality, Johor Skills College is committed to producing a skilled, competent, and competitive workforce in line with the human capital development needs of the State of Johor and the nation.
The history of Johor Skills College began with the takeover of the Skills Training Centre (PLK) under the Department of Social Welfare by Kumpulan Pendidikan YPJ in 1997. Kumpulan Pendidikan YPJ (KPYPJ) is a training institution under the Johor State Government responsible for administering and managing the implementation of skills training activities for four YPJ Community Colleges located in the state of Johor.
The main function of KPYPJ and the YPJ Community Colleges is to conduct skills courses at certificate and diploma levels in various fields to enhance the skills of school leavers as preparation to seize employment opportunities offered by the industry.
On 4 August 2015 and 10 July 2017, the Board of Directors’ meetings of KPYPJ, chaired by YAB Dato’ Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, the Menteri Besar of Johor, decided and agreed to change the name of YPJ Community College to a new name, namely Johor Skills College, and to adopt a new corporate logo. In addition to establishing a new brand, this change of name was intended to avoid public confusion with the functions of Community Colleges owned by the Ministry of Education Malaysia.
The Department of Skills Development (JPK) under the Ministry of Human Resources is responsible for formulating, promoting, and coordinating skills training strategies and programmes in line with the needs and technological and economic developments of the nation. For this purpose, JPK plays a role in regulating the implementation of the Malaysian Skills Certification System (SPKM), which is a method of awarding national skills qualifications.
The objective of SPKM is to produce human resources who possess the skills to perform workplace tasks as outlined in the National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) and are supported with the relevant knowledge and core competencies in specific fields. NOSS is a document that outlines the competencies required of a skilled worker working in Malaysia for a particular field and job level, as well as the pathway to achieve those competencies.
Johor Skills College is one of the Accredited Centres that has fulfilled the quality assurance requirements set by JPK. JPK places great emphasis on quality assurance in the implementation of training. Quality assurance encompasses control elements over the training institution as well as over the students themselves. Under the accreditation system, JPK has comprehensive guidelines in assessing the capability of a training institution to conduct training programmes before accreditation is approved. The aspects evaluated in the accreditation process of a training institution include infrastructure facilities and training equipment, qualified instructors, as well as a complete training curriculum that meets the requirements of NOSS.
